Why do we do what we do?

We’re all soda loving people at Zevia. We grew up with classic soda flavors, and turned away from them for health reasons. So making naturally delicious, healthier versions of the familiar favorites we grew up with, without sugar, just seemed smarter. In fact, Zevia is just that, the smarter soda.

For me, the Zevia story started with my conversion from a “sugar junkie” to a stevia fan. About 12 years ago, I quit sugar cold turkey in an effort to upgrade my health. I thought I was a health-conscious person – I exercised frequently, consumed meat in moderation, and used natural and organic products whenever possible. But when I really looked at my diet, I found I was consuming up to 250 grams of sugar per day, between protein shakes, energy bars, juice-based spritzers and other foods and beverages. That’s about 1,000 calories a day, just from sugars.

My wife and I decided we needed to make a change. We began using stevia as a sweetener, and to this day, my family uses only stevia in our household. Stevia has given us an alternative without negative side effects, and has kept us from feeling deprived in our sugar-free lifestyle. It’s had a tremendous impact on how we feel every day, and I’m confident it’s benefitting our long-term health.

The “Sugar Epidemic”

When we look at the major health problems confronting not just our country, but the entire world, two of the largest, obesity and diabetes, have direct links to sugar.

It’s shocking, but in the US, 27% of the adult population is obese, and even worse, 17% of kids 2-19 years old. In addition, 25 million Americans have diabetes, with another 79 million being classified as pre-diabetic. Simply put, sugar is killing us.

We hear a lot about “better for you” sweeteners, whether it’s honey, fruit juice, or agave. At the end of the day, your body can’t tell the difference – they’re all sugar. They may be metabolized slightly differently, but they all have calories, and all contribute to obesity, diabetes and other health problems.

And frankly, for a lot of people, artificial sweeteners just aren’t a good alternative. In a recent study, 64% of those surveyed said they were concerned about the safety of artificial sweeteners, and I’m certainly among that group.

At Zevia, we feel it’s not just our business, it’s our responsibility to tell people that there’s a better way. We’re passionate about stevia, and if we can make the soda category– and the world – better with our product, that’s a very meaningful contribution.

What’s different about Zevia?

With natural products, being healthy isn’t enough – a product has to taste great, and also be healthy, to really be a compelling alternative. At Zevia, we really believe that we’ve created a better soda.

And we’re fortunate that our fans are vocal. Every day, we receive letters, emails and calls from folks who have just discovered Zevia, and are thrilled to have a product they can feel good about consuming every day.

One of the most fun things about working at Zevia is sharing our products with people who used to drink soda and stopped, or in some cases always avoided soda for health reasons. Kids are the most fun of all – we meet lots of kids who’ve never had soda in their lives, because it was banned in their household, and to watch their faces when they try Zevia for the first time is priceless.

Similarly, people with diabetes, people seeking to lose weight or control their weight, or people who just want to live a healthier life really light up when they discover our product.

We don’t think that soda should be a “four-letter word,” and we’re out to change the way people think about soda by providing a healthy option that tastes great.
