Meet Our Registered Dietitian, Kristina Cooke

Meet Our Registered Dietitian, Kristina Cooke

At Zevia, we’re passionate about sugar reduction. So, it’s no surprise that we wanted to bring a Registered Dietitian to the team! Meet our in-house Registered Dietitian and Health and Wellness Program Manager, Kristina Cooke, RD. Kristina is a nutrition expert and Los Angeles native that has worked as a clinical dietitian, gained experience through outpatient nutrition counseling, and runs her own private practice. She has been with us for a bit over two years, and has since developed our Zevia Health Professionals Community, which consists of dietitians, nurses, physicians, health coaches, and more! Through the Health Professionals Community, Kristina is able to connect with other healthcare providers who are also passionate about sugar reduction, ensure information is evidence-based, develop handouts, connect with health organizations, and provide retail and food service support.

Why did you choose to become a dietitian?

I used to be a very picky eater, and challenged myself to try new foods. By the following year, I went from consuming almost solely cookies, pizza, and ham sandwiches on white bread to consuming a variety of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. My mission is to help others do the same in whatever way works best for them. Personally, making this change catalyzed a period of growth in my life, and I realized that making one small change is like casting a rolling stone. It picks up momentum, and where you find healing and growth in one place, you become eager to find it in another.

I knew, since a young age, that I wanted to help others. It’s incredible watching someone’s health improve before your eyes – seeing cholesterol and blood sugar levels lower over time. I’ve worked with patients and clients in various capacities, but in my current role, I am able to help others in a different way. I feel my role here allows me to improve public health by spreading the word about a beverage option that both tastes great and doesn’t have the calories or added sugars we aim to avoid.

How did you first hear about Zevia?

I first learned about Zevia through the 2017 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Boston. I received some sample boxes and absolutely fell in love. Now I am able to spread the word about Zevia with my own patients and clients in my private practice by offering coupons, samples, and utilizing the fact sheets and educational handouts we’ve created in my role as Health and Wellness Program Manager at Zevia. I’ve found it so helpful to have tools that we can provide health professionals to make it easy for them to discuss Zevia attributes with patients and clients.

What is your favorite part about working at Zevia?

Zevia is a brand with integrity. Everyone that works here genuinely stands behind the goal of reducing sugar consumption, 1 can at a time, and puts sustainability at the forefront of the daily choices in their role. It really feels that everyone who works here is on the same page, and that there is a mission that we are all collectively on to improve public health. The culture is positive and uplifting, and it’s been a pleasure working with this team. I look forward to continuing to grow and support our Zevia Health Professionals Community.

Do you have a personal recipe you’ve created using Zevia?

My favorite is Vanilla Grilled Peaches! This recipe is sweet, refreshing, and low sugar. Including fruit in your dessert is a great way to round out the meal, while including fiber and micronutrients. This recipe is so simple and can be made with just a few items you have around the house. Bonus points, since it’s vegan, gluten-free, and pretty much any other way you choose!

Yield: 4 servings

  • 2 cans of Zevia Cream Soda
  • 2 ripe peaches, halved and pit removed
  • 1 vanilla bean (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)

  • In a bowl, add halved peaches, Zevia Cream Soda, and vanilla. Let sit for 2 hours.
  • On your heated grill, allow the peaches to grill until tender with grill marks. Flip so they cook on both sides.
  • Serve flesh side up, warm, with your favorite low sugar ice cream on top!
